It was reported that the team will shoot some sequences in Chennai after lockdown since the team will find it difficult to head to Hyderabad for the shoot.[91] After the government gave permissions to resume film and television production after the pandemic, Rajinikanth was reported to join the sets in October 2020.[92] However the makers postponed the film's shooting to November,[93] citing the team's safety.[94][95][96] In mid November 2020, the makers officially stated that the shooting will resume on 15 December 2020 with Rajinikanth joining the schedule,[97][98] and was expected to be completed within a single stretch in order to complete the shoot quickly.[99][100] Rajinikanth headed to Hyderabad on 14 December and started the shoot before the scheduled date,[101] with Nayanthara being present on the film's sets.[102][103] Sources claimed that Rajinikanth worked for more than fourteen hours in order to complete the film's shoot, before the actor's entry into politics.[104][105] But the film's shoot however was halted on 23 December 2020,[106] after eight crew members were diagnosed with COVID-19,[107] although Rajinikanth being tested negative,[108] the actor has undergone self-quarantine in Hyderabad.[109][110] However Rajinikanth was hospitalised on 25 December 2020, due to fluctuating blood pressure,[111][112] and was discharged on 27 December.[113][114]

Times of India gave the film 2 out of 5 writing "If Petta felt like a pastiche of Rajinikanth's films, Annaatthe seems like a collage made out of the weaker moments from director Siva's filmography. We have the villains from Siruthai, the 'saviour who cannot reveal his identity' angle from Veeram, the brother-sister sentiment from Vedalam, and the rural backdrop from Viswasam. The result is a movie whose emotional beats feel blatantly calculated and manipulative. Given that the sibling bond is its core, we expect scenes that show us why and how Kaalaiyan and Meenatchi are close. Instead, like in the recent Udanpirappe, characters only keep talking about the relationship! With this leading to an unaffecting tale, D Imman's use of a sentimental score hardly adds an emotional punch to the action scenes, which are shot in a generic manner."[211] Sify gave the film 2.5 out of 5 writing "The bottom line about Annaatthe is that, although the old Rajini formula is back, the entertainment we had witnessed in those days is missing in this 2021 film."[212] Mirchi9 gave the film 1.75 out of 5 writing "Overall, Annaatthe is a very formulaic and routine mass sentiment fare that is predictable and outdated from the word go. The biggest of names go through the motions providing no fun and vigour. It will be a favour to every Superstar fan if they forget the movie exists."[213] Hindustan Times gave the film a negative review writing "Annaatthe is unarguably the weakest film in Siva's filmography. For all those who complained Darbar was Rajinikanth's lamest film in recent years, they'll change their opinion as they step out of Annaatthe."[214]

Ghoshal's mother used to help her in rehearsals and accompany her on the Tanpura, starting with mostly Bengali songs. At the age of six, Ghoshal started with her formal training in classical music. She acquired training from Late Kalyanji Bhai for 18 months and continued her classical music training with Late Mukta Bhide in Mumbai.[13][12] Her first stage performance was made at a club's annual function. When she turned six, she started her lessons in Hindustani classical music.[6] In 2000, at the age of sixteen, she participated and won the television music reality show Sa Re Ga Ma (now Sa Re Ga Ma Pa) on the channel Zee TV.[14][15][16]

In 2000, Bhansali and music director Ismail Darbar offered her the opportunity to be the voice of Paro, the lead female character of Devdas, who was portrayed by Aishwarya Rai.[11][23] Ghoshal sang five songs in the film, namely, "Silsila Ye Chaahat Ka", "Bairi Piya", "Chalak Chalak", "Morey Piya", and "Dola Re Dola", with established singers such as Kavita Krishnamurthy, Udit Narayan, Vinod Rathod, KK, and Jaspinder Narula.[24] She was sixteen when she recorded the first song for the film, "Bairi Piya" with Udit Narayan. Her Higher Secondary Examinations were nearing that time and she would take her books and notebooks to the studio to study during downtime. "Bairi Piya" was an instant success and topped the charts.[11] The film garnered her first Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for "Dola Re" (shared with Kavita Krishnamurthy)[25] and a National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for "Bairi Piya".[26] Her performance also won her the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent.[25]

2018 started for Ghoshal collaborating with S. Thaman for the song "Mandhaara" from Bhaagamathie. She later provided her rendition for "Allasani Vaari" from Tholi Prema.[184] She also lent her voice to four songs for the delayed film Phir Se... (2018).[185] Ghoshal continued with song Ghoomar from the period drama Padmaavat, along with Swaroop Khan. Composed by film's director Sanjay Leela Bhansali himself, it was based on the traditional music and dance forms performed by the Rajput queens of Rajasthan.[186][187] The song was well received, with critics praising Ghoshal for her rendition.[188][189][190] Gaurang Chauhan from Times Now noted that the song "is appealing and will be, if not already, a favourite among dance performers across India."[190] "Ghoomar" went on to earn Ghoshal the Filmfare Award for Best Female Singer.[191] She was next heard in the recreated version of "Ek Do Teen" from Tezaab (1988) in Baaghi 2 and the title track of Dhadak (2018).[192][193]

Investigation tightens as they start interrogating Jimmy, Martin's best friend and business partner. A manhunt for Tony also begins as he and his car are found to be missing. Meanwhile, Kishore's brother-in-law Vinay also gets involved as he begins to tail Dr. Nikhil one night after some suspicions arise. Further investigations reveal the malpractice that happened at John's hospital in testing unauthorized drugs on kids. Finding Tony's whereabouts and the perpetrators (spoiler alert) behind the mysterious deaths form the climax of the story.

As an innovative approach, Hema Rukmani teamed up with ICONICbot, an Indo-Austrian Venture, powered by actor Vishakha Singh,[93] to launch an artificial intelligence based chat-bot for the production house through Facebook Messenger. This is a first-of-a-kind initiative in the South Indian film industry, in which an artificial intelligence technology is used to connect with all movie goers personally, where chat-bots are used in Hindi cinema by top stars for promoting their films.[94] Hema Rukmani had stated that "though we share the information about the film through the official Twitter handle of the production house, there must be false news prevailing all around. So, we had planned for launching TSL chatbot where fans can share the relevant information with them exclusively."[94]

M. Suganth, editor-in-chief of The Times of India rated the film three-and-a-half out of five and said, "With Mersal, we have got this year's most engaging mass masala movie. When you have a mass hero in full form like Vijay is in the film, how can things go wrong?".[146] Manoj Kumar R. of The Indian Express also gave three-and-a-half out of five stars stating "Atlee has not just exploited Vijay's stardom to deliver a flamboyant crowd-pleaser (which he did in Theri already) but has fleshed out an interesting script that plays up the best onscreen traits of the actor."[147]

Sify rated the film three out of five stars and said the film as a "formulaic mass masala action film with a strong social message, whistle worthy moments, eye candy heroines and grand visuals". It further added that the film "relies squarely on the charm of its leading man (Vijay) to pull off its over-the-top tone".[148] Priyanka Sundar of Hindustan Times said that the film "is not about the story, but the way it is delivered; the emotions, sentiment and social message formed the crux of the story", but criticised the length of the second half and the manner in which Samantha's character's arc is resolved.[149] Behindwoods stated there are triple Vijay in the movie and it had created triple positive impact and rated it 2.75 out of five stars.[150]

Sreedhar Pillai of Firstpost called that "the perfect film for the larger-than-life image of its superstar Vijay, has something in it to satiate viewers with varied tastes", giving a rating of three out of five stars.[154] Indiaglitz gave three out of five stars saying "With his winning formula of old wine in a new bottle, Atlee has proved beyond doubt his caliber as a commercial director and has delivered a sure shot winner".[155] The New Indian Express-based critic Daniel Thimmayya called the film as "ultimate commercial entertainer that rides on Vijay's solid performance and Atlee's slick storytelling".[156] 2ff7e9595c
